Immediately when I saw the word ‘Reflections’ for Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge, only one image came to mind.
This probably stems from the fact that my Greek adventure really made a big impression on me.
Greece was on my travel bucket list for a long time. There was never a good time to go due to work, lack of funds, and my parents’ growing concern about the state of affairs in Greece. But when I saw the awesome Thessaloniki Dream Trip my travel club World Ventures had, I immediately started making plans to get myself to Greece!
Athens was the last stop of the Greek adventure my best friend and I had and there was never the question of whether we would be going to the Acropolis, just a matter of when. After all, with beautiful view of the Acropolis right from the comforts of our Airbnb apartment, it’s hard not to be reminded of the fact that this monument is a must see when you go to Athens.
On the day we decided to go up to the Acropolis, it was closed. So the next day, we tried again. But! It was raining cats and dogs. We waddled through the slightly flooded streets to the entrance of the Acropolis, we were beat, well, I was beat even before we started the climb up the Acropolis. Thankfully, despite the foreboding sky, it didn’t rain again that day.
To cut the long story short, the rain was a blessing in a way. There were fewer people visiting the Acropolis that day and I got the chance to capture this beautiful image as a keepsake. I spent quite a while trying to get this short. Taking multiple angles in the hopes of getting the perfect shot. Then once I had finished, I sat down on one of the rocks behind that stone bench, stared at the marvel that is the Acropolis and pondered.
How did the Greeks manage to build this awesome citadel located on a high rocky outcrop above the city of Athens, thousands of years ago?! Those are pretty heavy blocks of stone they’ve got there! They managed to create such a beautiful structure in a time where there no cranes or lifts, or helicopters. How did they climb up to the top of this flat-topped rock!?
Compared to our modern buildings and structures, it is pretty amazing that it is the ancient structures that impress with their intricate carvings and design. Maybe technology has indeed come in the way of unique design and craftsmanship? Or perhaps it is just a matter of preference. Could be that it is I who find such classic Greek design more appealing modern architecture…?
Nah… I love architecture, modern or classic, gothic or otherwise, all the same.
What do you think?
Have you been to the Acropolis? What do you like or dislike about it? What kind of reflection did you have while in the presence of such amazing work?
