My Week In New York City – April 2012

The SIA Brat – In New York City, After Dark

[Bright Lights, Big City]

I am attracted to bright colourful lights. That is one of the reasons why I love New York City and Las Vegas so much! There is SO much to see and do at night!

Growing up in the bustling city state of Singapore, I’m used to having so many places to go even if it’s 3am in the morning. But I must admit that my hard partying days are way behind me. Now, the only reason why I’d be up at 3am in the morning is most likely because I am rushing script after script after script.

But still, I am used to the connivence of getting food or entertainment regardless of the hour. So it’s no wonder I love visiting cities.

Singapore also has a pretty awesome view at night but we’re talking about my week in New York City. And since pretty bright lights are my thing, how could I be in New York City and not visit Rockefeller Center’s Top of the Rock Observation Deck at night right?

The view is breathtaking! How can you not fall in love with New York City after seeing a view like that?

Now I’m sure some of you are now asking, why Top of the Rock and not the Empire State Building? Don’t get me wrong, the view from the the Empire State Building is gorgeous too! But, if you’re viewing the city from the Empire State Building, obviously you won’t be able to get the awesome view of the Empire State Building!

And personally, I think that the architecture of the Empire State Building is prettier than the Rockefeller Center. Also, there are set timings to go up to the observation deck, which is also much bigger than the one at the Empire State Building, as such, the queue at Rockefeller Center is mostly shorter than the one at the Empire State Building.

That said, we still went to the observation decks of both buildings. We timed it such that we would get up to the Empire State Building’s observation deck in the evening to catch the sunset. After the sun went down, we made our way to Rockefeller Center for another bird’s eye view of the city.

Looking at the views of the city at daytime doesn’t seem to thrill me as much as the city skyline at night. You’ve seen both sets of photographs, you decide where you stand on this matter for yourself. Me? I. Love. Pretty. Bright. Lights!

But the view of the city is just as lovely from higher ground as it is from street level as well. Here’s some of my favourite night shots of New York City’s most iconic buildings and landmarks.

Like a moth to a flame, I am inexplicably drawn to New York City. And until my next post in the My Week In New York City – April 2012 series, here’s some food for thought…

What do you think?
What do you like about New York City? Which other city’s skyline is breathtaking? Do you think a city looks prettier in the daytime or at night?
